A new nitriding process i.e., simultaneous nitriding and decarburiza-tion(SDN) in the same furnace, was experimented. 0.3mm thick specimens containing 3%Si, 0.2%Mn, 0.015%A1, 0.5%Cu were prepared by vacuum induction melting, 1,200°C slab reheating, hot rolling and one stage cold rolling. These specimens were nitrided simultaneously with decarburization in a mixed wet atmosphere of H_2, N_2 and NH_3 and then batch-annealed for secondary recrystallization. After the nitriding treatment, it was found that the specimens contained several hundreds ppm of nitrogen and the nitrining process did not interfere with the decarburization. In addition, the specimens developed stable secondary recrystallization with sharp Goss texture after batch annealing.
