The annealing behaviour of subgrain structures is explored using a cellular automaton that simulates motion by curvature. The initial microstructures are statistically equivalent to experimentally measured deformation structures in terms of grain boundary structure, texture and misorientation distribution. The subgrain boundary energies and mobilities are taken from experimental measurements of low-angle dislocation boundaries. Abnormal subgrain growth naturally occurs in these systems, and the rate of growth of these abnormal subgrains is in good agreement with analytical theory.
