The mechanical properties of composite components are decisively influenced by the fibre arrangement. Nevertheless the use of conventional technical textiles limits the possibilities of the fibre arrangement by the type of the textile and by the handling aspects. We developed a new textile process called Tailored Fibre Placement (TFP) for the production of reinforcement structures. This process allows a consequent transfer of calculated results into the textile reinforcement structure, so that the reinforcement has locally varying fibre orientations and quantities. Therefore the best exploitation of the fibre properties is possible. The near-net-shape produced preforms are useable for thermoset and thermoplastic composites. Through the high degree of automation the production is cost effective and the conditions for quality management are positive. High cost savings can be achieved especially with complex shaped structures through a small amount of material waste. The high production rate and flexibility enables production on small and large scales. This paper reports on the technology of TFP. The advantages and the possibilities of this technology will be demonstrated and some applications will be introduced.
