The viscosity of fluids tends to damp their motion when disturbed. This property was applied to damping vibration of a solid plastic beam. Small capsules were partially filled with a viscous fluid and cast into liquid epoxy. The vibration response of the beam with and without the fluid damping was measured. The half power bandwidth at each resonant frequency was determined, and an increase in damping was found. Unlike conventional viscoelastic damping materials, this one is not subject to the same creep and stress relaxation problems, a novel property in passive damper materials.
