This initial, pre-empirical, on-site study of five international joint ventures and five wholly owned foreign subsidiaries in China revealed that the transfer of strategic management know-how from the foreign company to its Chinese affiliate was limited. The reasons were complex but were related to political, economic and cultural factors, the purpose of the affiliate, the desire of the foreign company to preserve its competitive edge, and non-access to the Chinese domestic market. However, such transfers are expected to increase as China's emerging economy induces both it and its foreign investors to adopt significant institutional changes to realize their global objectives.
