One application of the Internet that is soon to become part of our daily lives is controlling devices and systems over the Internet. This paper presents a software architecture that binds a control mechanism to the Internet connectivity and allows control of devices remotely. However, the salient feature of this system is its versatility and configurability. It is designed to control various types of devices seamlessly without changing the underlying service logic. The control mechanism (layer), as well as the user interface layer, has been isolated to serve modularity and ease of reconfiguration. The main contribution of the paper lies in providing a versatile client/server system that can be easily reconfigured to remotely control any device over a local area network, and analogously, over the Internet without the need for recompilation and with minimal setup effort. The system has been implemented and tested on a simple led driver circuit and a miniature robot arm. As a result, we were able to remotely and securely control both the systems.
