A Preliminary Study on Creating Common Sign-Language Communication System on the Internet

CG technology has been applied in many fields in recent years. The Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) and Java provide a standardized, portable and platform-independent way to render dynamic, interactive 3D scenes across the Internet. In this paper, we propose to build a Human-Computer Interaction by a VRML/Java approach, where we hope to create a common sign-language, named avatar language, that is a nonverbal language mainly based on the gestures and emotional expressions of the avatar, so people who do not share common verbal language can implement real-time communication with each other by avatar language across the linguistic barrier via the Internet. The experimental result shows that the proposed avatar language chatting system is a promising communication way of bridging the gap between different cultures.
