Networked appliances often do not have enough computational resources such as disk space and CPU power for certain tasks because of their physical limitations of size and power consumption. They cannot display multi-media data files or execute complicated programs that are downloaded from servers on the Internet. To overcome this problem, we developed the R-Anywhere resource management system. This system allows appliances to borrow excess computational resources of other devices. An important feature of R-Anywhere is its dynamic adaptation mechanism regarding the requirements of the user. We can customize procedures for resource sharing mechanisms without stopping the services of the system. This paper describes R-Anywhere's system architecture, communication protocols, and services. R-Anywhere's dynamic adaptation mechanism provides networked appliances with services that cannot be supported on existing distributed systems.
