Simulations of chemical processes often begin and end in the realm of technology. They are not always utilized in ways that maximize their value. The scopes of our most recent projects have included the development of dynamic simulations. The simulations were originally developed for use in design, but also for instrument checkout, testing the Programmable Electronic System (PES) configuration, and to serve as a simulator for operator training. A state of the art dynamic simulation of the plant was linked via OPC to the actual control system configuration of a PES by working together with the manufacturers. Both programs can reside on the same PC, and access is limitless through PCAnywhere or similar programs. The dynamic simulation can be linked to the ACTUAL configuration and displays to test advanced control schemes, test and tune loops, interlocks and alarms. This gives a REAL LIFE feel of the process, control system, interface for operators, and makes it the ideal interface for training. It has opened to door to developing advanced control systems, developing on-line property estimators and heath indices in the future.
