Proper Application of New Technology Consistency Meters

The art of papermaking is still an art of fiber, water, and chemistry. Yet, technology has advanced the art form. Among other things, many instruments have evolved, such as consistency meters. There are many types of consistency meters available today, from nuclear and optical to rotary, blade and other insertion. There are also new microprocessor-based instruments. All these new instruments beg the question where to apply these and what are the correct conditions for considering each. This paper will address the basic principals and purpose of consistency measurement. The material will address application considerations in general and as part of a specific discussion of the pros and cons of each type of technology. It will conclude with a discussion of new and advancing technology. The intention is to give engineers, technicians and designers guidelines for design and maintenance of consistency meters. Thus minimizing misapplications.
