Most current electromagnetic flow meter designs feature transmitter level diagnostics. Users can be automatically alerted to operational problems such as circuit board failures, scrambled memory, and wiring problems. However, underlying process problem that could impact flow sensor performance by increasing uncertainty often go undetected. This creates a dilemma for users who no longer can afford to perform routine preventive maintenance on their meters. This paper will discuss a recent breakthrough in advanced diagnostics that will enable users to perform predictive maintenance on their electromagnetic flow meter installations, thus reducing life cycle costs.
