Technique for Dredging within the Beijing Urban Environment

DREDGING within the Beijing urban environment for water system rehabilitation and beautification is the first attempt in undertaking such influential environmental protection works. It sets a good example for comprehensive rehabilitation of urban river systems in other cities, with outstanding social benefits. It is hoped that the technique of using dredges for long distance transportation of material will be widely adopted in future work. In late 1997, the Municipal Government of Beijing City decided to implement a uniform planning scheme and carry out comprehensive improvements to the urban water system, so as clean up water flows, vegetate the embankments, and make the canals navigable. China Water Conservancy & Hydropower 13th Engineering Bureau, have undertaken and completed the Six Lakes Dredging Phase Ⅰ and Phase Ⅱ Works. Two Beaver 600 dredgers have discharged about 700,000 cu.m of silt from Xihai Lake to the disposal area at Beiwu near the Summer Palace, over a distance of 15Km. The "Six Lakes" are Three Shicha Lakes (Front, Rear and West), Middle Lake, Southern Lake, and Northern Lake.
