Technological Development for Rolling Mills through Common Mechanics, Electrics and Automation Design

At SMS Demag, continuous development efforts are made towards the improvement of products, productivity and flexibility of production, production of new materials, stability of the process, maintainability and efficiency of project engineering and commissioning. From these requirements, system solutions are being designed that are characterized by co-ordinated developments in mechanics, electrics and automation. Examples of such joint developments from hot rolling are explained, including the "Thin Gauge Rolling Package" for rolling strips on a CSP-mill down to 0.8mm. Joint mechanics and electrics developments not only focus on technology, but also on fast start-up. Start-up times for modernisations and new plants are optimised by performing simulation tests (PILT) including the original mechanical and electrical equipment in the laboratory before delivery. With the focus on technology-driven solutions and mutual adaptation of mechanics and electrics, SMS-Demag's electrical and automation portfolio has grown to be a full electrical supplier "from the drive shaft to the process planning system". Solutions and their technical and economical impact are explained.
