On behalf of the officers and members of ACM_/SIGAPL and NY/SIGAPL and the conference organizing committee, I would like to invite you to APL2001 -An Arrays Odyssey. We have done our best to provide you with a varied, stimulating, and enjoyable conference on array-programming languages. The selection of our theme has a bit more substance than simply reminding us of Stanley Kubrick's spectacular movie. In the data processing environment of 2001, there seem to be far more paths along which we must Iread than ever before. This is both a challenge and an opportunity. Our tutorials and workshops are designed to help you follow along some of those paths that may be on your to-do list.Academics and researchers arc now hypothesizing that, instead of computer science being a necessary evil, all of science is becoming computer science. Theoretical models suggest that all of existence is information processing. Ultimately, will our beloved Gerard Langlet be correct - will the foundation of the Universe indeed prove to be not-equal scan?As we planned the conference on array-programming languages, APL2001: an Arrays Odyssey, we shamelessly borrowed our theme fi'om a film popular some years ago. Our paper contributors and invited speakers have embraced this theme of the array as an integrating and expansible exploratory vehicle, taking us on intriguing journeys into the many dimensions of technology.I am pleased that the response to our call for participation has encouraged contributors to present us with exploration in a number of array processing environments. We will have the opportunity to learn from each different view.We have planned a full schedule of tutorials and workshops to provide additional opportunities for attendees to travel widely into new spaces and deeply into familiar ones.Welcome to the conference, either in person or as a reader of these proceedings. Many people have worked hard to make this conference a reality. Many individuals and firms have contributed support in one form or another. The whole point of all this work is you -- the value you will get from the Conference and the record of it in these proceedings, the chance you will have to share knowledge with others. I think that APL and Array Processing remain invaluable tools for many and varied purposes. I think that conferences such as this are well worth the effort. I ~s t that you agree. Welcome to this Arrays Odyssey.
