Based on extensive experimental on site investigations a kinetic model is developed for simulating copper in drinking water systems (CiDS). CiDS allows to simulate the copper concentration in plumbing systems. The fundamental equations of the model are the dissolution of copper due to the corrosive oxidation during stagnation periods and the solubility equilibrium of the water, concerning malachite. The model is used to investigate the cuprosolvency in drinking water supplies, dependent on water compositions, stagnation period and pipe ages. This allows to calculate the influence of different water treatment processes on copper by-product release in drinking water systems. In many cases the number of necessary tests could be reduced.
