Qualitative phase analysis of Portland cement clinker with the Rietveld Method

This paper presents the results of quantitative phase analysis of Portland cement clinker with the Rietveld method in comparison with those of light microscopy and the common Bogue calculation. It is shown that the fundamental parameter approached Rietveld analysis is well suited for a rapid and accurate quantitative determination of the phase content of Portland cement clinkers. The direct phase quantification with Rietveld analysis and microscopy found approx. 9% more C_3S and approx. 7% less C_2S in relation to the Bogue calculation. A somewhat higher C_3A content (up to 3.5%) is determined with Rietveld analysis in presence of the orthorhombic alkali-aluminate. The lower ferrate content (up to 3%) in Rietveld analysis and microscopy is due to the iron incorporation into other clinker phases, which is not considered by the Bogue calculation.
