Natural stone conservation in St.Michaelis Cloister, Hildesheim

摘要

The natural building stones of St. Michaelis cloister in Hildesheim are stronly affected by environmental influences and other factors of deterioration. Especially the rhaetic siltstone shows severe damages caused by the low decay resistance of the stone, the high content of salt forming ions and the unsuitable microclimate at the cloister. Extensive analytical work and detailed measurement of climate reveal the decay mechanisms and lead to a conservation concept which includes a protective shelter in front of the whole cloister.
