Using the classification process for naval ships

摘要

This paper describes how the provisions of classification are applied to naval ships and how Lloyd's Register's Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Naval Ships have been developed. The paper presents the development of a flexible system that meets the needs of different navies that will enable them to bring within the scope of classification specialised ship structures and engineering systems. An analysis of how the classification system can be applied to naval ships in practice is presented together with details of the scope and limitations of using the system. How the classification system provides for changes in supply requirements and changes in international standards and regulations that may be applicable to naval ships is also discussed. The message is that the use of the classification process for naval ships offers cost effective and independently accountable process for the procurement of ships and the regulation of materiel condition for in-service operations expected and required by Naval Authorities.
