Decreasing defence budgets among larger countries, and smaller budgets of other nations which are now faced with new or increased threats, mandate that further naval forces be both capable and cost-effective. The new MEKO A-Class of corvettes presented by the author's company is intended to provide, in the above mentioned sense, the major element in the maritime defence of a nation's interests. These warships have been designed to be a most modern and highly effective solution to the problems faced by navies in the new century. A number of very interesting features, which will be described in more detail in the paper, have beenincorporated into these new corvette designs such as: the well proven MEKO modularity concept encompassing more outfit and systems than ever; the development of a stealthy ship design in respect to all signatures; the significant reduction in crew number; the implementation of an advanced propulsion system.
