Softkill - a balance between signature suppression and countermeasures

An effective softkill capability, as part of the self-defence system of a surface vessel to counter Anti Surface Ship Missile (ASSM) hits, is one way to increase survivability. It is characterised by a balance of the signatures of the vessel and the counter measures. To optimise this balance or to evaluate the softkill concept of future surface vessels, the ASM attack and the softkill defences have to be studied in computer simulation. This paper deals with the predicted Radar Cross Section (RCS) of contemporary and future surface vessels and with an Anti Surface Ship Missile Defence which takes into account the specific data of different ASSM with Radar seeker heads as well as the RCS values and data of the countermeasure system of specific surface vessels.
