As the Chinese economy develops steadily and rapidly in recent years, the development ofthe automobile industry has been driven as well. It is predicted that the number of automobiles willexceed 1.6 million in year 2000. The development of the automobile industry also causes heavypollution, which in turn damages the health of the people. The newly established automobile effluentcontrol standard will be implemented in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou on July 1, 2000 and otherplaces in China on January 1, 2003. In the new standard, the sulfur content in gasoline is reduced to0.08% from 0.12% and olefin content no larger than 35%, which was not controlled in the previousstandard. This paper will discuss the current status and developing trend of automobile fuel in China.
