Compared to the other refining processes of stainless steel, the AOD (Argon-Oxygen Decarburization) process has a series of obvious advantages. Since the first set of the AOD vessel was completed and gone into operation in 1968, therefore, this technology has been getting the more and more extensive applications and the great developments in the range of the whole world. It not only has become a principal method to produce stainless steel, but also may be used to make almost all the steels. As an important application of the submerged gas blowing technique, the most serious shortcoming of the AOD process is the short life of its refractory lining. The operative practice indicated that a remarkable feature of the refractory lining of the AOD vessel is suffered from the non-uniform wear and erosion. That would undoubtedly be closely related to the gas blowing conditions and the melt motion patterns in the bath. In order to improve the gas stream state at the tuyere outlet and the fluid flow pattern, thus to alleviate the erosion to the lining, quite a few studies on the structures and designs of tuyeres, including the single and annular tube type tuyeres, had been conducted.
