Great Lakes Steel Division B-2 blast furnace, with a hearth diameter of 28 ft. and an annual production of 1,000,000 tpy, is scheduled for a rebuild in the year 2000. One problem confronting the re-build engineers is the choice of lining type to be provided in the bosh region. High heat loading generated by coal and natural gas injection has exacerbated wear in the banded bosh.
