An essential requirement to linear induction accelerators is that the transverse magnetic field component on the centerline of the accelerator is near naught. However, transverse amgnetic field may be produced by location errors of acceleratory windings. An efficient way to reduce or cancel the transverse field is placing annular iron rings within the windings, since it is much easier to make the location of the iron rings in a symmetrical way relative to the centerline than remove the location errors of the windings. With the three-dimensional surface magnetic cahrge method, we have anlayzed the transverse field reduction effect of the iron rings which have different dimensions and different distributions, and designed iron rings for linear induction accelerators to reduce the transverse magnetic field.
