The long-term reliability implications of the move to RoHS-compliant assembly processes have yet to be fully measured. While part of this challenge relates to solder-driven issues such as tin whiskers, other defects result from higher processing temperatures required for IR or convention systems. This paper will look at the benefits of lower temperature processing in a vapor phase system which utilizes a fluorinated fluid, perfluoropolyether (PFPE) to create a vapor at nosphere. It will discuss processing advantages which include a broader process window and improved solderability.
