It is possible to trace the evolution of the steam turbine from its invention to the present day (e.g. The Parsons Centenary - a hundred years of steam turbines by F.Harris - Institute of Mechanical Engineering, 1984) and any other starting point is to some extent arbitrary. However for the present paper the U.K. 500 MW units (1960s) is chosen as these machines had most of the features of modern turbines - solidly coupled rotors, multi-cased HP and IP turbines, last stage blades appraoching a metre long and were specified for flexible operation at 160 bar with main steam and reheat temperatures of 538 or 565 deg C.
