The potential impact of the release of trace elements into the environment from combustion and gasification processes is reviewed. The review commences ith considertion of the likely levels of concentration and modes of occurence of the environmentalyy more improtant trace elements in coal, together with the principal emthods of detection and quantification of these trace elements, Emphasis is then given to the aprtitioning of trace elements between solid residues and gaseous emissions during both combustion and gasification rpcesses, including thermodynamic prediction and practical observation. The review is completed by consideration of potential means for the capture of trce element components from gaseous emissions and a summary of the current legislative situation regarding trace release into the environment.
