Further decreases in NOx emissions of burner systems, in particular of domestic boilers and engines (Striling, steam turbines, etc) are of enomous interest nowdadays. Therefore, at the Institut of Fluid Mechanics of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, a burner based on staged combustion in an inert porous medium for heating water with a thermal power of up to 20 kW was built. The construction allows invetigations of the effects of staging with fuel or air at various positions of the combustion region for different thermal powers, staged quantities and air ratios. The results show that-depending onthe porous materials-the NOx emissions can be decrease db about 30
