Tension control is essential in polymer film production to assure product quality, maximum utilization of plant equipment, and profitability. A typical polymer film handling system is shown in Figure 1. The system consists of a polymer film between two driven rollers. For polymer films under non-isothermal conditions, the temperature is critical to the tension calculation due to the induced thermal strain and the temperature sensitivity of the physical properties. The goal of this study was to model the effects of heat transfer on the tension in polymer films during production.
