The Ohio River is one of the busiest inland waterays in the world with over 250 million tons of cargo being carried on the system annually. The river is kept navigable year round by a series of locks and dams along its 981-mile length. Each of the locks and dams process a large number of commercial and recreational vessels through their locks.
