Development and coast guard approval of a composite piping system

The US Coast Gurard has been proactive in the development of their Policy FIle Memorandum (PFM) for composite piping of offshore platforms. At oone time the requirements of IMO A753(18), which were for shipboard use, were applied to offshore platforms. His required any firevwater piping to be tested in a furnace for 1 hour dry with no water in the pipe, and no leakage allowed when hydro tested. The US Coast Guard realized that an open type platofmr that would be abandoned at the first sign of fire was not the same as an enclosed ship that could not just be abandoned. The PFM allows for the piping to be tested to IMO Level II (30 minutes loaded with water), when certain design restraints are followed.
