Drilling for deep0 gas reserves is an expensive process. The cost for deep wells are disroportionately large when compared to shallower wells. One method to reduce costs is to reduce the size of the well bore. However, in the past this was not economical because the savings due to the smaller well size were consumed in additional time to drill the well. The tools such as bits and down hole mud motors drilled slower and were less reliable than their larger counterparts. This paper describes a field test of an improved slim hole drilling system consisting of a 3-3/8 in. Diameter mud motor and a hybrid TSP/PDC bit. The new system was run in the same formations as a conventional mud motor using an identical bit. Results of the test are reported in the paper along with the theory and design of the new high-power slim-hole drilling system.
