The effect of the rocking motion of the unanchored flexible cylindrical storage tanks on the sliding response due to the seismic excitation is investigated. Two kinds of mechanical models are developed in order to examine the simulation for seismic response. One is the five-degree of freedom model including the coupling behavior between the sliding and rocking, including the effects of the flexible deformation of the shell and base plate by hydrodynamic pressure. The other is three-degree of freedom model excluding the rocking motion from the five-degree of freedom mechanical model. The validity of theses mechanicla models is demonstrated by the shaking table experiments with a model tank. From numerical simulations, it is clarified that rocking motion gives significant effect on the sliding displacement, and the taller tank slide easier than the broader ones.
