The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute(JAERI) has been conducting research and development of nuclear heat utilization system of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor(HTGR), which are capable to meet a large amount of energy demand without significant CO_2 emission to relax the global wanning issue. The High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor(HTTR) with a thermal out put of 30MW is constructed at JAERI and development program of the hydrogen production system using the nuclear heat of the HTTR is now progressing. This program is to demonstrate the applicability of nuclear heat for extensive energy demands besides the electric power generation. This paper summarizes the status of the research and development of the hydrogen production system with a HTGR at JAERI.
