The Brussels-Capital Region created in 1989, with an area of 160 square kilometers and a population of 950,000 in 19 municipal districts, has competence for a number of territorial questions (urban planning, economy, energy, transport- and the environment in the broad sense to of the word). To fulfil these duties, the Region has its own legislative and executive bodies.
