The prediction of unsteady flow effects in axial flow multi-blade row turbomachinery has been a major focus of research over the last decade at Pratt & Whitney. In the constant pursuit to improve performance and durability of turbines and compressors while reducing weight and cost, today's airfoils are highly loaded, closely spaced and run at high temperatures. Unsteady flow interaction between blade rows may have major effects on performance and durability, and these effects are not captured by traditional steady state CFD. The need for an unsteady interaction prediction tool for turbomachinery design has thus driven the development effort. This paper describes the advancement made in the prediction of unsteady flows at Pratt & Whitney, and the application of these tools to turbine and compressor design.
