One of the most important objectives for chemical companies in the future is the minimization of all environmental damage associated with their operations. A landmark monograph (Anon. 1993), published by the US Chemical Manufacturers' Association, points out the problem and presents a hierarchy of strategies for pollution adatement. The number one strategy is source reduction: Avoid generating the waste or release in the first place. Strategy number two is recycling: If a waste or release cannot be reduced at the source, then recycle, reuse or reclaim it. Strategy number three is treatment: If there is no other option, then treat to minimize environmental impacts.
