Development of Slurry Phase Dimethyl Ether Synthesis Technology

Dimethyl Ether (DME) is a clean and economical alternative fuel, which can be produced fromvarious resources as coal, natural gas or biomass through syngas. The properties of DME aresimilar to those of LPG and it can be used for various purposes; for example, power generationfuel, transportation fuel, home fuel, etc.An innovative press of direct synthesis of DME from syngas in slurry bed has been developed.Pilot scale plant (5tons/day) testing has started successfully in 1999 with the Japanesegovernment support.A feasibility study of DME Fuel System, which includes production of DME from coal and itstransportation to Japan, indicates that DME is competitive to conventional fuels.
