A Study on EGSB Reactor to Treat High-strengh Organic Wastewater

A systematic study was conducted on EGSB (Expanded Granular Sludge Bed) reactor treating high-strength organic synthetic wastewater, the performances of the reactor by using anaerobic granular sludge as seed and the effects of different upflow liquid velocities (V_(up)) were investigated. Under mesophilic conditions (31~35°C), the COD removal efficiencies of EGSB reactor were about 98%, when the influent COD volumetric loading (OLR) was up to 42 kg/m~3.d, and the influent COD concentration was 8200~9000mg/l and V_(up) was 2.9 m/h. The increase of upflow liquid velocity from 2 m/h to 4 m/h could improve the COD removal efficiency, but more increase (above 6 m/h) would impair the stabilization of granular sludge structure and disintegrate the granule. When the anaerobic granular sludge from an UASB reactor was inoculated in EGSB reactor directly, the granule would be transformed.
