In the last years, the use of high strength graphites is becoming important. These materials can be made out of binderless polyaromatic mesophase (BPAM), which consist of mesophase material that sinterizes without the use of a binder. BPAM can be obtained using a carbonization-extraction process. The sintering ability of BPAM can be modified by controlling carbonization and extraction. The mechanical properties of this graphite are adequate. However, for some applications, this material is brittle and its wear resistance low. In this paper, the introduction of reinforcement has been used to improve these characteristics. Silicon carbide, which has a high wear resistance, has been tested as reinforcement The aim of this work is to study the effect of silicon carbides particles in sintering process of BPAM and how this affect to the mechanical properties of the carbons produced.
