The project "Furopean Pressurised Water Reactor" (EPR) was launched in 1992 by utilities and power plant designers in Germany and France. It incorporates the experience gained in both countries during planning, erection and operation of more than 70 nuclear power plants. The EPR design provides a gain in safety expressed by a probability for core melt accidents lower than 10~(-5) per plant and year and ensures that severe consequences to the environment due to severe accidents are paractically eliminated. Furthermore, the cost for electricity is competitive to any conventional power plant.
