During the basic design optimization phase, the dynamic behavior of the EPR's nuclear island was investigated with regard to seismic events. Realistic soil profiles and seismic excitations were taken into account in order to reproduce possible situations. One of the aims of this study was the determination of dynamic responses for hypothetical but realistic site-specific conditions in order eliminate the conservative assumptions adopted during the basic design phase. In order to achieve this goal, the effects of the soil-structure interaction were considered more realistically by performing seismic analysis of the entire nuclear island in the frequency domain.
