This paper describes the studies carried out to obtain a simplified approach for appropriate modelling of short span shear walls under seismic and other loading conditions, as seen from a designer's view. Short span shear walls span across a single bay or two bays of multibay multi-storied structures. These shear walls are provided based on feasibility considerations and integrated with the columns of the frames such that there is no physical separation between columns and the wall. These shear walls are generally modelled as shell elements with inplane and out of plane stiffness. Modelling with coarse meshes though adequate from inplane stiffness however is not useful for element design and necessitates a substructure analysis. This paper discusses an acceptable and appropriate modelling technique to adequately represent the shear wall stiffness in the analysis and acceptable for design.
