Comparison of Site Response Estimation Methods at BVDA

The Borrego Valley Downhole Array (BVDA) is a 3-D strong motion observation array located in Southern California. BVDA consists of a vertical array in soil, a rock outcrop station with surface and borehole sensors, and an extensive surface array. Site investigations at BVDA have included soil/rock drilling and sampling, laboratory testing of samples, and surface and borehole geophysical measurements. Percise 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D models of the smal alluvial valley were created from these extensive geophysical and geotechnical measurements. Using these models, ground shaking has been calculated for a nearby M4.9 earthquake with was recorded by the array. Results of 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D modeling of site response are compared with the measured data. Results show strengths and weaknesses of the different site response estimation methods.
