A Hierarchical Multi-Class Traffic Model for Data Networks

Many studies have shown that the statistical properties of packet-level data on today's networks are considerably different from the statistical properties of circuit voice traffic. While these studies revealed some interesting traffic characteristics, e.g., self similarity, heavy-tailed distributions, multifractals, etc., little progress has been made in developing good models for the purpose of traffic engineering and performance prediction.
