Numerical results from static and dynamic analyses of typical multi-story buildings with open shear wall cores are compared. The coresa re modelled using an "exact" shell finite element model as well as the "populuar" equivalent frame model with equivalent columns in the mass caentres of each individual flange of the core. The analyses are carried out using both methods prescribed by modern seismic design codes, namely the simplified modal response method and the multi-modal response spectrum method. The paper's objective is to determine and evaluate differences in stresses and displacements produced byt he two models when analysed by the aforementioned methods. In case of the response spectrum method, the differences in the response quantities due to the modal combination rules SRSS and CQC are also determined.
