In the last decade nanostructured materials are becoming increasingly important for our civilization. Applications such as super-strong steel, superhard coatings, magnetic recording, interchange coupled permanent magnet, sensors, catalysis and so on rely on the understanding and design of the structures at the nano-scale. This paper reviews three transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques that immerged and were applied recently to characterization of nanostructured materials by the current authors. Other techniques are also briefly outlined.
