Modern dynamic systems, such as manufacturing processes, are complex systems that demand continuous process monitoring, status evaluation and imple mentation of a variety of control strategies. An intelligent scheme is presented for control of manufacturing system under normal as well as fault conditions. A controller, well differentiated from plant, performs sequencing and scheduling of jobs under normal operating conditions while it performs reconfiguration operation under fault, breakdown or changed objective criteria. Reconfiguration is performed in terms of jobs re-routing and resource re-allocation, carried out by selecting a relocatable resource which would satisfy the new objective criteria. The re-routing problem is generally a multi-dimensional problem. A generalized framework is developed to deal quantitatively with the imprecision and complexity of the re-routing problem by using fuzzy multi-criteria analyysis technique in conjunction with fuzzy Petri net representation of the system.
