Rotary vacuum disc filters are used for many filtration duties in different indusstries, especially for the filtration of mass products requiring a filter technology with a large specific filter area and a high specific filter performance. Besides the high throughput rate it is required from the filter that it is able to react on changing conditions which are caused by the upstream process. At Al-hydrate filtration in alumina refineries e.g. the disc filters are fed from classifiers with a slurry that often varies strongly with respect to the flow rate of the product characteristics such as slurry density or grain size etc. Consequently, the required performance rate or the filtration characteristics of the product can change in a wide range during the filter operation. Therefore, the filter needs an operation control to ensure that it runs reliable even at operation points that may extremely differ from the normal average operation. This means that the filter must be very flexible and of a tough design. It must be able to run with high filtermust be very flexible and of a tough design. It must be able to run with high filter speed and thin filter cakes but also with low filter speed and thick filter cakes.
