New chemical technologies for deepwater flow assurance

One of the major issues associated with deepwater production and subsea systems is flow assurance. Chemicalls provide a major means of achieving flow assurance, especially when used in conjection with mechanical means such as insulation, heating and pigging. The chemical umbilicals associated with the long risers and tiebacks in cold deep waters require, however, that such chemicals meet a number of special requirements before they can be safely used in such systems. These requirements relate to materials compatibility, chemical stability and deliverability. It is the object of this paper to desicribe criteria and test methodologies used to develop new chemicals for achieving flow assurance in deepwater and subsea systems.
